- About Us
With over 65 years of fabric importing experience Nipkow & Kobelt, Inc (NK Textile) has earned its reputation as a leader and innovator, originally in silk and poly fabrics and more recently in fabrics for the dance, costume, gymnastics, cheerleading, theatre, and event planning.
Incorporated in 1946 in New York, NK Textile was the first company to import silk yarn to the U.S at a time when the weaving of the silk base fabrics was done here. In 1950 NK Textile imported the first woven silk fabrics to be dyed and printed here. Later, in the 1950's and 1960's, NK Textile became the first importer of natural silks from India. With the advent of polyester fabrics, NK Textile was first to import dyed and finished poly fabrics from Japan to the U.S.
In 1992 NK Textile acquired West Orient Silk — a company specializing in beautifully beaded and embroidered silk novelties made in India and sought after by interior designers within the high-end home décor industry. At about the same time, NK Textile developed holographic metallic sequins, as well as holographic glitter, both produced in the US for world-wide distribution. And, in 1998, NK Textile developed the ability to transfer holographic foil onto stretch fabric, an innovation that forever revolutionized the character of printed metallic fabrications!
Today, NK Textile continues to specialize in stretch and non-stretch novelty fabrics with metallic and sequin finishes. At the forefront of fabric innovation, NK Textile has extensive experience developing custom novelty fabrics for those customers able to meet production minimums.
Now, for the first time - through our nk-express division - we are able to offer our customers immediate shipment – with no minimums- on some of our most popular fabrics from our New Jersey warehouse.
